The smaller version for smaller skiers and riders, the Kids’ Hood has the latest in balaclava design: the hinged mouth. This is one of those design features that took a new generation to consider. Previously, even fabric constructed, sewn constructed, balaclavas were based on the time immoral knit balaclava. The knit design was, of course, constructed in the round, with a space left for the eyes to peep through. So simple to make, thousands of these things were knit for soldiers in WWI, WWII, and even for the war in Afghanistan. But for all that the original design works well for the knitter, for the wearer uncovering the lower face meant an uncomfortable bunch of fabric stuck under the chin. When that chin is inside a ski jacket with a high collar it can start to feel downright choking. But the design remained unchanged until recently, when a new generation of designers, unencumbered by the history of knitwear and comfortable with modern technical and stretch fabrics asked what should have been an obvious question: why? The hinge design solves the bulk problem by allowing the lower part of the balaclava to be tucked out of the way without pulling, bunching, or that lovely feeling of choking on excess fabric. It is, in a word, brilliant. In two words, brilliantly engineered. Your kids are going to love this thing.
